St Luke's Home

Benefice home

The window at the west end depict:

·

St Cedd, shown as the Bishop of  London

·

St Paul the sword.  The ship at his feet denotes his travels and shipwreck

·

St Luke, shown as the beloved physician.  He is holding a bunch of medicinal herbs and a paint brush, an allusion to the legend of his having painted a portrait of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

·

St Barnabas holding the Pilgrims staff and gospel of St Matthew

·

St Nicholas robed as the Bishop of Myra.  A boy holds a model of a ship, signifying his role as Patron Saint of Children and Sailors

The window was damaged in a daylight bombing raid on 19 October 1942.  The lower half of the window was completely shattered.  The replacement was dedicated on 8 July 1951.
